30 days of Drawing
Day 1
Full of hope, enthusiasm and wonder after my first art tutorial, I tackle the seemingly unsurmountable goal of developing artistic skill.
I don’t recall receiving any explicit instruction in art during my formal schooling. Moreover, I have never practiced or applied myself to developing skills as a visual artist. This is about to change. I have no idea how I will grow or what I will discover on this journey but I am committed to taking it.
Even if I don’t improve my skills at drawing, I can see that this experience provides many opportunities for me to develop as a person and future teacher. For example, I think it’s important to document my fears and feelings of inadequacy because I can see that it will provide me with valuable insight into finding ways to help struggling students. Worst case scenario through this endeavor will be continued frustration and failure. That experience alone provides valuable opportunities to grow as an educator.
So here I go. Will I learn to draw like Raphael or paint like Picasso in 30 days or less?
Well, as you can see from my first attempt, I have a long way to go.
Perhaps it is symbolic that I chose a coffee plunger as the subject of my first piece since it is obviously going to take a lot of hard work and possibly (caffeine fueled) late nights to evolve into a competent art teacher.
